Every Great Innovation Starts with a Problem
For Dr. Kapil Kella, a practicing dentist and owner of Lakeshore Dental Studio, that problem was the inefficiency and inconsistency of note-taking in dental practices. Frustrated by the time wasted and the lack of standardization, he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Dr. Kella had always been passionate about providing exceptional care to his patients. But there was one aspect of his practice that constantly frustrated him: note-taking. His clinical notes were inconsistent, often varying in detail depending on who was assisting him.
The Industry-Wide Challenge
Dental assistants, while invaluable, didn't always know what to document or how much detail to include. This lack of standardization not only created inefficiencies but also left room for errors that could impact patient care.
Dr. Kella wasn't alone in this struggle. Across the dental industry, he observed a common pain point: documentation was eating up valuable time that could be spent focusing on patients. On average, dentists and their teams were spending 1-2 hours a day on manual note-taking.

One day, after a particularly long day of juggling patient care and administrative tasks, Dr. Kella decided to experiment. He recorded a conversation with a patient using his phone's voice recorder, transcribed it, and used an AI tool to summarize it into a clinical note.
The results were impressive. The note was clear, detailed, and accurate. Intrigued but skeptical, he repeated the process with multiple recordings. Each time, the AI-generated notes were consistent and reliable. That's when the idea for Kaila was born.
